The Altar and Temple Series are small intimate worlds that draw you near, both into the art itself and inward to your own Self. Life on Earth is a great play of opposites where both immense joys and unspeakable tragedies are experienced. These pieces are a reminder of the only true sanctuary, within.
They began with a collection of old cigar boxes and evolved out of my affinity for old and ancient sacred spaces and places – temples, roadside shrines, spirit houses, chapels, ashrams, and monasteries. There is a grace and beauty in their timeworn surfaces and aged features and I feel most drawn to the ones that are off-balance and imperfect. No matter how old or falling apart, they are still standing, and a depth of silence pervades these sacred gathering places. They evoke a sense of peace and remembrance as if I’d been there, once before, a long time ago.

Akasha is the all-pervading infinite subtle space, also called "hidden sky” because although unseen, it is the essence of all beings everywhere. At anytime and anywhere we can enter this space for peace, guidance, healing, and inspiration.

Inspired by ancient wisdom, Loyal Raft refers to the “raft” of knowledge as the only way to cross the ocean of samsara - the never-ending cycle of death and rebirth – and reach the other shore of freedom or moksha, the transcendent state. This knowledge and experience of our true nature is loyal because it never leaves us, rather we leave it.

Mixed Media Assemblage Wall Sculpture or Freestanding Sculpture
Wood, Paint, Clay, Stone, Bamboo, Fiber, Antique Bead, Brass
15” h x 13.75” w x 3.5" d
This piece is symbolic of the “raft” of Self-Knowledge as the only way to cross the ocean of samsara and reach the other shore of freedom or moksha, known as the transcendent state. In Sanskrit, samsara is the never-ending cycle of birth, death and rebirth.
The time-worn features – the weathered “roof” and ragged “ropes”- speak of the passage of time on the wheel of samsara, and the ongoing perseverance, endurance, and discernment needed to transcend the world’s constantly changing illusory waters. In the center of the churning ocean of life sits a little clay Buddha with two devotees denoting the refuge of Satsang, where two or more gather in the company of Truth.
Originally called The Cigar Box Altars, The Altar and Temple Series began with a collection of old wooden cigar boxes. Loving the beautiful details of this particular box, I kept the brass hardware and paper label intact, along with the letter and number engravings.
